Shelf Styling

Hey there friends! And Happy August!

I hope you are enjoying the last few days of summer break…hasn’t it gone by so quickly?!

You know how I like to change things around often, right? Well, shifting things around also leads to restyling…and I wanted to share a few tips for styling open shelves.

I have to admit, styling shelves is not my favorite decorating job. I love furniture placement and table settings…but shelves always stump me. I have to shuffle things around until I get it just right.

I always start with gathering the items I want to use. And I like to include several of my favorite elements…wood, metal, ironstone, glass, and textures. So…for this vintage cart in our family room, I have books, French hemp sheets, baseballs, a wooden crate and a galvanized tray.

I tend to have too many things at first, and begin to simplify. After I shuffle the items, I always end by adding fresh flowers. To me, this adds the last pop of color and texture that makes it appear “finished”.

I also love to use items for purposeful reasons, not just for looks. Like the wooden crate…it’s actually a space to store all of our Wii games and accessories.

The baseballs are a special addition for my guys. They love baseball! We always have extra baseballs lying around, so I gathered them to put under the glass cloche.

I also like to remember my contrast rule…if the shelf is dark, then whiter or lighter items show up best. And visa versa.

The fresh herbs (pineapple sage) also add a pop of green.
