Today’s the day! It’s Reveal Day for our first Repurpose Design Series!
If you’re new here to Buckets of Burlap…Welcome! I’m honored that you are visiting my blog :)
The challenge was to add #salvageswagger to our homes by finding a used item to repurpose for $20 or less.
And without further delay…
my repurposed item is a paper mache’ rocking horse :
I found this sweet rocking horse at our local Goodwill for $3.99! It’s very lightweight of course, and measures 13 1/2” x 19”. It’s a perfect size for my mantle.
Now, I should mention, I have several items around my home that I’ve repurposed into farmhouse decor that cost $20 or less. I’ve shopped flea markets and antique shops for several years finding things I truly love.
When I went shopping specifically for an item for this Repurpose Design Series…I didn’t have any certain idea in mind. But when I saw this little guy, I knew exactly what I wanted to do. Paint him white :)
I used Annie Sloan Pure White Chalk Paint. The paper mache’ was easy to paint, and dried very quickly.
After the paint was dry, I used sandpaper to distress the edges and all details on the horse. The paint sanded off easily. Just so you know, you CAN use sandpaper on paper mache’ :)
I wanted to transform him into a horse that appeared pricy, wooden, and vintage. And I think I achieved the look :)
I had no idea he would turn out to be so handsome :) I really think he looks wooden, what about you?
You don’t have to spend a lot of money to have fabulous home decor. It is possible to purchase an inexpensive, used item, and transform it into something you can be proud to use in your home.
Are you surprised that I moved him all around my house taking photos? He looks great anywhere. Can you believe he only cost $3.99?

ReplyDeleteWhat a WOW tranformation!
ReplyDeleteHe looks AWESOME- and just in time for Kentucky Derby Weekend! Great timing for "all things horsey!" Very well done, Becky!
Looks fabulous! I LOVE Annie Sloan's chalk paint and have had great success with it but didn't know it would work on paper mache. Have you tried it and put wax on top of the paint to distress it? I couldn't believe how well it worked to antique metal handles! Thanks so much for sharing, I so enjoy your blog
ReplyDeleteBecky what a steal and you made him look just perfect!
