Kitchen Remodel Details

Now, I’d like to share with you the “nitty-gritty” of our recent kitchen makeover….and THANK YOU all for your sweet comments about our previous kitchen reveal HERE…

AFTER:

We moved into our new house in 2005, and until the summer of 2010,

the kitchen looked like this:

You can see in the photo above that I began painting the cabinets white around the fridge.  We knew we wanted a lighter, brighter space…and so we started by adding the barnwood island (purchased in Canton, TX). We also planned to have new countertops & cabinets installed because our budget only allowed for the builder-grade kitchen amenities at the time… therefore in 2010, we did cosmetic updates by painting the cabinets in a basic white and the walls in Cotton Fluff by BEHR. 

BEFORE:

Our goal for our new kitchen was to upgrade the cabinets & countertops along with adding usable storage space.  We also included vintage elements for a farmhouse country feel-- we love old farmhouses, however, this is a 6 year old modular house, so we have to create the look.

My husband is such an incredible carpenter…he built the reclaimed wood vent hood out of picket fence boards.  We had a professional cabinet maker build and help install the new cabinets.  We added bead board as a backsplash.

DURING:

We did all of the painting ourselves.  The cabinets, backsplash, and trim are all in Bistro White by Valspar.  The walls remained Cotton Fluff by BEHR.

BEFORE:

The butcher block countertops were purchased at IKEA, they are very reasonably priced.  We don’t have much countertop area, and only needed two 8 foot sections.  The Elverdam faucet also came from IKEA.

DURING:

The white farmhouse light pendant came from Home Depot.  The vintage columns under the sink were purchased from a local Antique Mall called Shreveport Trading Co.  And we found the Whitehaus farm sink at Blue Bath online.  It is my favorite part of the kitchen :)

AFTER:

The cabinets around the fridge were lacking in the storage department.

BEFORE:

Therefore, we had the cabinets built around the fridge.

DURING:

 

The seeding tray, hanging on the wall of the fridge came from Laurie Anna's Vintage Home in Canton.

This is the hutch area.  I really wanted it to appear as a separate piece of furniture, although it’s a built-in.  Our cabinet builder added the little round legs and backed it with bead board.

DURING:

He also made the hutch a bit shorter and added a slanted trim. I painted the hutch in a “homemade chalk” paint in light gray.  Then we added the vintage chippy columns and chicken wire on the doors.

AFTER:

The window/breakfast nook area didn’t change much.

BEFORE:

We added the long buffet table(which once was in the dining room) and I found these vintage window shutters at a local shop called Smith-Mason Legacies.  The cart below the buffet was also found locally.  The curtains are actually a throw blanket from IKEA, which I cut in half and hung from hooks onto the chicken feeders.

AFTER:

Our drawer-pulls and cabinet door knobs came from IKEA- this style was on closeout, at 50% off :)

And I hung a vintage picture frame above the stove and added lavender.

Once the sink area was almost done, I requested a small shelf above the sink.  It happens to be one of my favorite additions :)

Our family is very happy to have the kitchen finished…it was about a two month project.  It took much longer than expected, of course.  (especially if you are doing most of the work yourself)
